What is Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient treatment refers to levels of addiction treatment that offer a variety of therapies and support services, but don’t have a residential component.

Patients who receive outpatient care need to be at the center only when the program is in session. During non-treatment hours, they can return to their homes or, in some cases, to alternative supported residences.

Outpatient Treatment Programs in Jacksonville

Treatment at our outpatient rehab in Jacksonville, is provided at two levels: a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).

PHP

Our partial hospitalization program is in session, 9 a.m.—4:30 p.m., five days per week.

A PHP can be an ideal option for patients who have recently completed an inpatient or residential program, and who need additional support to reinforce the progress they made at their previous level of care.

Our PHP also serves patients who have not previously been enrolled in treatment, but who can benefit from full days of care without round-the-clock supervision.

IOP

The intensive outpatient program at our rehab provides care Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m.—noon each day. Depending on each patient’s progress and continued need, they may attend either three or five sessions per week.

As with our PHP, patients may step down to our IOP from a higher level of care, or they may begin treatment directly at this level.

Therapies Offered in Outpatient Addiction Treatment

When you choose our outpatient rehab in Florida, your care may involve elements such as:

  • Individual therapy: Individual therapy involves confidential, one-on-one conversations with a licensed therapist. These sessions can be ideal opportunities to review your treatment progress, address concerns that you may be hesitant to discuss in a group setting, and receive focused feedback.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy brings small numbers of patients together in a supportive and collaborative environment. With the guidance of a trained professional, group participants can gain vital information about the recovery process, practice essential relapse-prevention skills, and share support with others who are working toward similar goals.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a goal-oriented form of therapy that is designed to ease psychological distress by helping people identify and change their maladaptive thought patterns, self-defeating behaviors, and problematic beliefs.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) uses individual and group sessions to help people improve their skills in four key areas – mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • EMDR therapy: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based approach that helps people overcome psychological trauma by alleviating emotional pain associated with specific traumatic memories.
  • Surf therapy: As a complement to traditional talk therapy, surf therapy can help participants develop greater resilience, enhance their confidence and self-esteem, and discover a healthier outlet for dealing with difficult emotions.
  • Holistic therapy: Holistic therapy incorporates a variety of activities – such as art, yoga, meditation, and vibroacoustic therapy – to strengthen the mind-body connection and help people experience physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Please note that your customized plan may not include every service listed above. Treatment can vary depending in your unique needs as well as which program (IOP or PHP) you are enrolled in.

Medication Management Services

Many people who develop substance use disorders also struggle with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other untreated mental health concerns.

In many such cases, the appropriate use of certain prescription medications can ease the symptoms of these conditions, which can improve the individual’s ability to progress in their recovery.

If we determine that a patient can benefit from this type of intervention, we can include medication management services in their customized outpatient treatment plan.

Support Group Integration

At our outpatient rehab in Jacksonville, 12-Step education and support are a vital components of treatment.

By integrating the practices and principles of this peer-led service into our programming, we are able to introduce our patients to the power of shared support within the global recovery community.

How Long Does Outpatient Treatment Last?

People who enroll in our Florida outpatient rehab usually remain in treatment for about 60–90 days.

However, we don’t have rigid maximum or minimum lengths of stay in our outpatient programs. Instead, we work closely with each patient to track their progress, identify continuing areas of need, and determine the duration that’s most appropriate for them.

Long-Term Recovery Planning

At our outpatient rehab in Florida, we know that recovery is a lifelong pursuit that demands daily diligence.

In treatment, we address long-term topics such as learning how to advocate for your own needs, developing effective relapse-prevention strategies, and putting together an effective personal support network.

Before they transition out of our care, we also develop customized aftercare plans for each patient, with information about community-based services and other resources that may be valuable to them in the weeks, and years to come.
